Development and Validation of a Six-Factor Parenting Attitudes Scale for Caregivers of Children in Middle Childhood

This study aimed to develop and validate a Six-Factor Parenting Attitudes Scale for caregivers of children in middle childhood. Based on the Self-Determination Theory, this study identified six parenting dimensions that influence children's psychological needs—either by supporting or undermining autonomy, rela tedness, and competence: These were autonomy support, control, warmth, rejection, structure, and chaos. Data were collected through online surveys from 800 parents of school-aged children. An exploratory factor analysis (N=420) and confirmatory factor analysis (N=380) were conducted, resulting in a scale consisting of 30 items structured around the six latent factors. The reliability of each subscale was within an acceptable range, with Cronbach’s alpha values ranging from .74 to .84. To further validate the scale, correlation analyses and nomological network analysis were conducted. The results demonstrated that the Six-Factor Parenting Attitudes Scale is both reliable and valid in measuring parenting attitudes as perceived by parents. In this study, a scale was constructed using a rational-empirical approach grounded in Self-Determination Theory, and it is expected to be applicable in clinical and educational contexts to foster development and adjustment in children. Limitations are also addressed and directions for future research are provided.
