『도련님』이 쓰여진 메이지 시대는 급격한 근대화가 전행된 과도기로서 서양의 문물을 무분별하게 받아들였다. 나쓰메 소세키는 중류 지식층인 도련님의 시각으로 야마아라 시와 아카샤쓰의 대립구도와 권력 중심 사회의 구조적 모순을 드러내는 동시에, 근대 지식인이 추구해야 할 이상적 가치관과 근대화의 방향을 제시한다. 소세키의 이상적 인 윤리의식은 구시대적 가치가 아닌 인류가 추구해야 할 보편적 가치라는 점에서 높이 평가받아야한다.
The Meiji era, in which Botchan was written, was a transitional period of rapid modernization, during which Japan indiscriminately embraced Western civilization. Natsume Soseki reveals the structure of confrontation between Yamaarashi and Akashatu and the structural contradiction of power-oriented society from the perspective of the middle-class intellectual, and at the same time suggests ideal values and the direction of modernization that modern intellectuals should pursue. Soseki' s ideal ethical consciousness should be highly regarded in that it is a universal value that mankind should pursue, not an outdated value.
