본 연구는 박물관이 단순한 전시 공간을 넘어 사회적 치유의 장으로 기능할 수 있음을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 영국 사이언스 뮤지엄의 문화처방 프로그램을 중심으로, 사회적 투자수익률 분석과 인문학적 서사 해석을 융합하여 박물관 기반 치유프로그램의 사회적 가치를 측정하였다. 먼저 프로그램 참여자 데이터와 공개된 2차 자료를 활용하여 투입․산출․성과 단계별 사회적 투자수익률 모델을 설계하고, 정성 자료에 대한 타구에트 코딩을 통해 ‘정서적 회복’, ‘사회적 연결’, ‘자기성찰’ 등 핵심 서사 범주를 도출하였다. 정량적 분석 결과, 본 프로그램은 £1 투자당 약 £4 이상의 사회적 가치(사회적 투자수익률 비율 4.3:1)를 창출한 것으로 나타났으며, 질적 분석에서는 참여자들이 박물관 경험을 통해 정서적 안정과 공동체적 소속감을 회복하는 과정을 확인하였다. 이러한 결과는 박물관이 문화적 치유의 실험장으로서 복지․보건․문화정책의 연계지점이 될 수 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 문화기반 치유산업의 사회적 가치 평가에 인문학적 관점을 접목함으로써, 박물관학의 공공성과 사회적 확장 가능성을 제시한다.
This study empirically analyzes how museums can function as spaces of social healing beyond their traditional role as exhibition venues. Focusing on the ‘Prescribe Culture’ program of the Science Museum in the United Kingdom, the research measures the social value of museum-based healing programs by integrating Social Return on Investment (SROI) analysis with a humanities-based narrative interpretation. Using participant data and publicly available secondary sources, an SROI model was designed across the stages of input, output, and outcome, while qualitative data were coded with Taguette to identify key narrative categories such as “emotional recovery,” “social connection,” and “self-reflection.” Quantitative results show that the program generated approximately £4 of social value for every £1 invested (SROI ratio 4.3:1). Qualitative findings further reveal that participants experienced emotional stability and a renewed sense of belonging to the community through their museum engagement. These results suggest that museums can serve as experimental grounds for cultural healing and as integrative nodes linking welfare, health, and cultural policies. By incorporating a humanities perspective into the social value evaluation of culture-based healing industries, this study highlights the expanding public role and social potential of museum studies.
