‘국립박물관’의 탄생과 ‘국립박물관장’ 김재원의 탈식민화 기획

The Birth of the ‘National Museum’ and Kim Jae-won’s Decolonizing Project as ‘Director of the National Museum’

본 연구는 해방 국면이라는 특수한 시대적 맥락 속에서 ‘국립박물관’의 탄생을 ‘국립박물관장’ 김재원의 사상 및 활동을 통해 조명함으로써, 국립박물관의 정체성과 거버넌스가 어떻게 형성되었는지 재검토하려 했다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 ‘국립박물관’의 탄생을 조선총독부박물관과의 연속성 및 청산되지 못한 식민 유산에 대한 성찰보다는 그로부터의 탈식민화 과정에 주목했다. 특히 해방 직후 국가체제가 부재했던 시기부터 미군정기를 거쳐 대한민국 정부 수립 시기까지에 집중함으로써, 국가 형성과 ‘국립박물관’ 설립의 역동적 관계를 재조명하고, 초대 ‘국립박물관장’이자 최장수 ‘국립박물관장’인 김재원의 사상과 활동이 ‘국립박물관’의 정체성과 거버넌스를 구축하는 데 어떻게 결정적인 역할을 수행했는지 규명하고자 했다. 이를 통해 해방 국면에서 시작된 박물관 접수 활동과 ‘국립박물관’으로의 독립기구화 및 ‘국립박물관장’직의 신설, 그리고 이러한 과정을 관통하고 있던 김재원의 민족문화 재건 사상과 실천, 그에 입각한 국가행정과의 갈등 및 불신임 속에서 국립박물관의 초국가적 거버넌스 구축으로 이어지는 일련의 과정을 드러내고 설명하고자 했다. 그럼으로써 미완의, 형성과정에 있던 국가체제를 건설해 가는 과정에서 ‘국립박물관’의 탈식민화를 위한 김재원의 사상과 실천은 해방 직후의 시대적 상황 및 열망과 공명하면서, 고유한 탈식민적 국립박물관 모델을 만들어냈음을 제시했다.

This study sought to explain how the identity and governance of the National Museum were established, by examining the birth of the ‘National Museum’ within the historical context of the liberation period in postwar Korea, and by shedding light on the thoughts and activities of Kim Jae-won, the first and longest-serving ‘Director of the National Museum’. To this end, the study focused on the decolonizing process of the National Museum, rather than on its continuity with the unresolved colonial legacies. By concentrating specifically on the period from the immediate post-liberation absence of a state system, through the US military government period, to the establishment of the Republic of Korea government, it reexamined the dynamic relationship between the nation-building in postwar Korea and the establishment of the ‘National Museum’. It sought to clarify how the thoughts and activities of Kim Jae-won played a decisive role in establishing the identity and governance of the ‘National Museum’. Through this, it sought to reveal and explain the series of processes: the museum takeover activities initiated during the liberation phase, the establishment of the ‘National Museum’ as an independent institution, the creation of the ‘Director of the National Museum’ position, Kim’s thoughts and practices of rebuilding national culture, his subsequent distrust towards state administration system, leading to the establishment of the National Museum's supranational governance. Kim Jae-won's thoughts and practices for the decolonization of the ‘National Museum’ during the nation-building era created a unique decolonized model for the National Museum, resonating with the historical circumstances and aspirations immediately following liberation.
