국제질서의 전환기, 무엇을 가르치는가: 2015․2022 개정 교육과정 중학교 사회 교과서 서술 변화

Teaching in a Time of Transition in the International Order: Changes in the Narratives of Middle School Social Studies Textbooks

본 연구는 2015․2022 개정 교육과정 시기의 중학교「사회2」교과서 각 4종, 총 8권에 수록된 국제사회 관련 서술의 변화 양상을 양적․질적 접근을 통해 분석하였다. 중학교 ‘사회’는 국제정치라는 지식․이해 범주에서 국제 사회의 행위 주체 및 국제 문제와 분쟁에 대해 다루는 공통․필수 교육과정으로서의 중요성과 의의가 있다. 국제정치의 3개 주요 이론 - 현실주의, 자유주의, 구성주의 - 에 근거하여 국제사회를 서술하는 관점과 내용을 상징하는 키워드를 도출하고, 텍스트 마이닝을 통해 키워드의 출현 빈도와 양상을 분석․시각화 한 후, 질적 근거 검증을 바탕으로 국제사회에 대한 교과서 서술의 경향성 및 변화를 탐색하는 데 본 연구는 주목하였다. 연구 결과는 교과서라는 창을 통해 학생들이 마주하는 국제사회의 모습과 국제정치에 대한 서술의 실재 및 변화를 실증적 근거를 통해 제시하고, 국제정치 관련 교육의 이론적․실천적 시사점을 제시하는 데 기여할 것이다.

This study analyzes changes in the descriptions of global society and international politics presented in eight middle school social studies textbooks-four published under the 2015 Revised Curriculum and four under the 2022 Revised Curriculum-through both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The middle school social studies curriculum holds significance as a common and compulsory subject that addresses actors in the international community as well as global issues and conflicts under the knowledge and understanding domain of international politics. Drawing on the three major theories of international politics-realism, liberalism, and constructivism-this study identified key words symbolizing the perspectives and contents through which global society is portrayed. Using text mining, we analyzed the frequency and patterns of the key words, and further examined the tendencies and changes in textbook narratives about the international community through qualitative validation. The findings provide empirical evidence of how global society and international politics are represented and have evolved in textbooks as resources that shape students’ perceptions of the world, and offer theoretical and practical implications for education related to international politics.
