보훈교육자료의 현장적용을 통한 학교 보훈교육 활성화 방안 탐색: 『2024년 교사, 보훈 동아리』 활동 사례를 중심으로

보훈은 국가를 위하여 희생⋅공헌한 사람과 그 유족에 대한 예우와 지원을 통해 숭고한 정신을 기억하고 선영하는 행위로 정의된다. 보훈은 국민들의 자긍심과 일체감 형성에 중요한 역할을 한다. 공훈에 보답하는 행위는 국가와 국민 정체성을 유지⋅발전시키는 데에 필수적이다. 최근의 보훈정책은 보훈대상자의 물질적 지원 중심에서 전체 국민의 애국심 고취 및 보훈문화의 조성⋅확산으로 무게 중심이 이동하고 있다. 교육적 관점으로 시선을 보다 집중하는 것은 어린이와 청소년 등 미래세대를 대상으로 한 보훈교육과 보훈의식 함양의 필요성 인식을 함의한다. 본 연구에서는 보훈교육의 최적의 장소이자 플랫폼을 ‘학교’로 상정하고 학교의 보훈교육에 주목하였다. 보훈 주제의 학습공동체 운영 사례를 깊이 있게 살펴봄으로써 학교 보훈교육의 가능성을 진단하고 보훈교육의 활성화 방안을 도출하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 먼저 보훈과 보훈교육에 대해 이론적으로 탐색하였다. 보훈의 개념을 정리하고 보훈에 대한 인식을 검토한 후 보훈교육 선행연구 분석을 통해 기존 연구의 한계점을 도출하였다. 이어 연구 방법을 개관하고 교사, 보훈 동아리활동의 운영 과정과 결과를 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 학교 보훈교육 활성화 방안을 제언하였다. 본 연구를 기반으로 학교 보훈교육에 관심 있는 연구자들의 보훈교육 실천사례 발굴ㆍ공유와 더불어 보훈교육의 확장 가능성을 기대해본다.

Veterans education is defined as the act of remembering and honoring the noble spirit of those who have sacrificed for the nation and supporting their bereaved families through respect and courtesy. It plays a vital role in fostering national pride and unity. Rewarding meritorious deeds is essential to maintaining and developing national identity. In recent years, the focus of veterans’ welfare policies has shifted from providing material support to veterans toward promoting patriotism across society and cultivating a culture of respect for veterans. From an educational perspective, this shift underscores the importance of veterans education in cultivating awareness among future generations, including children and youth. This study assumes that schools represent the optimal setting and platform for veterans education and therefore concentrates on veterans education within school contexts. The purpose of the study is to assess the potential of veterans education in schools and to propose ways to revitalize it by closely examining the case of a learning community dedicated to the topic. First, relevant theories concerning veterans and veterans education were reviewed. After defining the concept of veterans and examining public perceptions, the limitations of existing research were identified through a review of prior studies. Next, the research method was outlined, and the operational process and outcomes of the ‘2024 Teachers, Veterans Club’ activities were analyzed. Based on these findings, practical strategies for revitalizing veterans education in schools were proposed. This study can assist researchers to discover and share practical examples of implementation, thereby demonstrating the potential for broader expansion of veterans education.
