중·고등학생의 그릿에 대한 인과 요인 탐색: 구조적 인과모형 접근

Exploring the Causal Factors of Grit among Middle and High School Students: A Structural Causal Modeling Approach

본 연구에서는 한국아동·청소년패널조사 2018(KCYPS 2018)의 6차년도(2023년) 학생 및 학부모 설문을 활용하여 그릿을 예측하는 상위 20개 변인을 도출하고, 중학교 3학년과 고등학교 3학년을 대상으로 그릿의 인과경로를 비교·분석하였다. 연구방법에서는 먼저 랜덤포레스트 기법을 이용해 그릿의 예측변인을 추출한 후, 구조적 인과모형(SCM)의 인과 디스커버리 알고리즘을 적용하여 인과그래프를 산출하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 그릿을 예측하는 주요 변인들은 주로 학생의 기질, 신념, 태도 등의 사회정서 영역에 속하는 것으로 확인되었다. 둘째, 공변인을 통제한 인과경로를 분석한 결과, 추출된 변인 중 주의집중 문제, 스마트폰 의존도(내성), 부모/보호자 그릿은 두 학교급에서 모두 그릿에 직접적인 인과효과를 나타냈다. 셋째, 학교급에 따라 주요 인과변인이 달라졌는데, 중3에서는 학업열의(효능감), 진로적응(호기심), 양육태도(비일관성), 고3에서는 스마트폰 의존도(일상장애)가 인과효과를 보여 발달상의 차이를 시사하였다. 본 연구는 그릿에 영향을 미치는 변인에 대한 인과적 해석을 대규모 자료 및 머신러닝 기법을 통해 분석함으로써, 그릿 형성에 대한 이론적 이해와 실천적 개입에 중요한 함의를 제시한다.

This study investigated the causal mechanisms underlying grit in adolescents using the sixth wave (2023) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018). Drawing on student and parent survey data, we identified the 20 most salient predictors of grit and compared causal pathways between ninth-grade and twelfth-grade students. Predictors were first extracted through a Random Forest algorithm, followed by causal graph estimation using a causal discovery approach within the Structural Causal Model (SCM) framework. The analysis revealed that predictors of grit were primarily associated with temperament, beliefs, attitudes, and socio-emotional functioning. After controlling for covariates, attention problems, smartphone dependency (tolerance), and parental grit exerted direct causal effects on grit across both grade levels. Grade-specific effects were also identified: academic engagement (self-efficacy), career adaptability (curiosity), and parenting style (inconsistency) had unique causal effects in ninth grade, whereas smartphone dependency (daily dysfunction) was distinctive in twelfth grade. By integrating large-scale longitudinal survey data with machine learning and causal inference techniques, this study contributes to the theoretical understanding of grit and offers implications for targeted educational interventions.
