뷔히너의 『렌츠』에서 나타난 실존적 고통의 연극치료적 의미

The Dramatherapeutic Meaning of Existential Suffering in Büchner’s Lenz

본 연구의 목적은 게오르크 뷔히너의 단편소설 『렌츠』를 실존적 관점에서 고찰하고, 렌츠가 경험하는 실존적 고통과 분열을 연극치료적 의미로 탐색하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 얄롬의 실존 개념인 죽음과 고독(소외), 자유와 의미를 이론적 틀로 설정하여 연극치료 과정에서 나타나는 실존적 특징을 탐색하였다. 다음으로 렌츠의 고통이 지니는 치유성과 연극치료적 의미를 고찰하기 위해 작품 속에서 렌츠의 분열의 원인을 추적하고, 서사적 전개의 흐름 속에서 반복적으로 나타나는 렌츠의 분열적 징후와 고통의 장면들을 중심으로 이들이 지니는 실존적 의미와 연극치료적 함의를 분석하였다. 이를 통해 렌츠의 여정은 치유를 향한 고통의 역설로 해석될 수 있음을 제시하였다. 렌츠가 경험하는 죽음의 공포와 저항할 수 없는 신체적 고통, 타자와의 단절과 끊임없이 빠져드는 근원적 고독, 삶의 의미와 자유 획득의 좌절로 인한 존재론적 위기는 자기 회복을 위한 잠재성을 내포한 치유의 과정으로 이해될 수 있다. 기존의 『렌츠』연구가 주로 문학적·정신병리학적 분석이나 근대 이데올로기의 과도기적 분열을 다룬 사회·철학적 접근에 집중한 데 반해, 본 연구는 실존적 관점과 연극치료적 관점에서 렌츠의 실존적 고통과 분열의 징후들을 치유적 맥락에서 조명했다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.

The purpose of this study is to examine Georg Büchner’s novella Lenz from an existential perspective and to explore the existential suffering and fragmentation experienced by Lenz in terms of their dramatherapeutic implications. To this end, Irvin D. Yalom’s four ultimate existential concerns —death, isolation, freedom, and meaning in life—are adopted as a theoretical framework through which the existential characteristics reflected in Lenz’s experiences are examined from a drama therapy –informed perspective. In order to investigate the healing potential and dramatherapeutic significance of Lenz’s suffering, this study traces the causes of his fragmentation within the text and analyzes recurring signs of disintegration and scenes of suffering as they unfold within the narrative. These elements are examined with a focus on their existential meanings and therapeutic implications, suggesting that Lenz’s journey may be interpreted as a paradox of suffering oriented toward healing rather than as a purely pathological breakdown. The fear of death and uncontrollable physical pain experienced by Lenz, his disconnection from others and immersion in profound existential isolation, and the ontological crisis arising from the frustration of attaining freedom and meaning in life can be understood as processes that contain the potential for existential recovery and self-reintegration. Whereas previous studies on Lenz have largely focused on literary and psychopathological analyses or socio-philosophical approaches addressing transitional fragmentation within modern ideology, this study highlights the significance of approaching Lenz’s existential suffering and signs of fragmentation within a healing-oriented context from both existential and dramatherapeutic perspectives.
