호머 베절릴 헐버트(Homer Bezaleel Hulber)는 1902년 영국왕립아세아학회 한국지부에서 발간하는 트랜잭션에 34쪽 분량으로 수록된 ｢한국 민담｣에 한국 민담의 종류, 특징, 역사적 성격 등을 고찰했다. 헐버트는 한국 고유의 예술, 한국인의 마음을 파악하기 위해 한국 구비문학을 연구했다. 헐버트는 한국 민담의 하위 항목을 이야기(tales/story), 신화적인 이야기(mythological stories), 전설(legend), 잡동사니 허구(Whole realm of miscellaneous fiction)로 나누어 유형별 특징을 고찰했다. 헐버트의 한국 설화 분류는 개인 연구이고, 이른 시기 연구였지만 체계적인 구성으로 다방면의 이야기를 포함하고 있다는 점에서 선구적이다. 또한 신성성/세속성, 초월성/제한성의 분류 체계는 아르네 톰슨의 연구를 비롯한 이후 설화 분류에서도 적용되고 있다. 헐버트는 한국 고유의 예술, 한국인의 마음을 탐구하기 위해 한국의 민속, 민담을 발굴하여 기록했다. 한국 민담 연구는 중국 것의 모방이 아닌, 자생적으로 생겨나 순수하게 한국적인 것에 접근하기 위한 방편이었다.
In 1902, Homer Bezaleel Hulbert (1863–1949) published a 34-page article entitled “Korean Folktales” in the journal Transaction, which was published by the Korean branch of the Royal Asian Society of England. Here, Hulbert examined the types, characteristics, and historical nature of Korean folk tales. He divided Korean folk tales into the subcategories of tales/stories, mythological stories, legends, and the whole realm of miscellaneous fiction, examining the characteristics of each type. Hulbert’s classification of Korean folktales is a personal study. An early study, it is pioneering in the way it presents a systematic composition of various stories. Hulbert’s research classifies stories by applying codes of divinity/secularity and transcendence/restriction, and it is noteworthy that this system is also applied to Arne Thompson’s research. In particular, the setting of “miscellaneous fiction” of “unknown,” which account for the transmission of dynamic folktales, is noteworthy and exemplifies academic humility.
