Effects of Project-Based Nursing History Education on Nurse Image, Major Satisfaction, Nursing Professionalism, and Self-Directed Learning Ability in Nursing Students

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a project-based nursing history education program on nurse image, major satisfaction, nursing professionalism, and self-directed learning ability among first-year nursing students. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. A total of 92 first-year nursing students from two universities located in G Province were assigned to intervention (n=46) and control groups (n=46). The intervention group participated in a 7-week project-based nursing history education program, while the control group received traditional lecture-based instruction. Nurse image, major satisfaction, nursing professionalism, and self-directed learning ability were measured before and after the intervention, and the changes between the two groups were compared. Results: The intervention group showed statistically significant improvements in most variables compared with the control group. Significant differences were found in nurses’ perception, major satisfaction, and nursing professionalism. Self-directed learning ability also increased in the intervention group, although the difference between the groups approached statistical significance (p=.055). Conclusion: Project-based nursing history education was found to be an effective instructional strategy for enhancing nurse image, major satisfaction, and nursing professionalism among first-year nursing students, demonstrating its potential for improving self-directed learning ability. These findings highlight the educational significance of nursing history education at an early stage of the nursing curriculum and suggest the need for active implementation of learner-centered, project-based learning approaches in introductory nursing courses.
