The Strategy of the Serpent in Genesis 2:25~3:7

This study aims to clarify the serpent’s strategy in the Eden narrative, focusing on Genesis 2:25–3:7. Methodologically, from a synchronic perspective on the Masoretic Text (MT), it analyzes characterization and the rhetorical development of the dialogue through a text-centered close reading. In particular, by attending to the ambivalence of the term ʿārum ( עָר וּם ; wisdom/craftiness) and the narrative setting of a "speaking animal," the study reveals that the serpent’s strategy progresses through the stages of "ambiguity → negation → reinterpretation," as manifested in the three speeches of Genesis 3:1b, 4, and 5. In conclusion, this paper identifies that just as creation was fulfilled by the Word of God, temptation is likewise a subversive linguistic event realized through the "speech" of another being. Specifically, it demonstrates how subtle linguistic shifts reconstruct the divine command and foster distrust, thereby transforming the evaluation of ʿārum from wisdom into craftiness.

본 논문은 창세기 2:25-3:7을 대상으로 에덴 내러티브에 나타난 뱀의 전략을 규명하는 데 목적이 있다. 방법론적으로는 마소라 본문(MT)에 대한 공시적(synchronic) 관점에서 텍스트 중심의 면밀한 읽기를 통해, 인물 묘사와 대화의 수사적 전개를 분석한다. 특히 단어 ‘아룸( עָרוּ ם , 'arum)’의 양가성(지혜/간교)과 ‘말하는 동물’이라는 설정에 주목하여, 창세기 3:1b, 4, 5의 세 발화를 중심으로 뱀의 전략이 ‘모호성 → 부정 → 재해석’의 단계로 진행됨을 밝힌다. 결론적으로 본고는 하나님의 말씀으로 창조가 성취되었듯, 유혹 역시 또 다른 존재의 ‘말’을 통해 실현되는 전복적인 언어적 사건임을 규명한다. 즉, 미세한 표현의 변화가 어떻게 신적 명령을 재구성하고 불신을 형성하여, ‘아룸’에 대한 평가를 지혜에서 간교로 전환시키는지 논증한다.
