Trends in CCUS Technologies for the Valorization of Byproduct Gases: Patent, Policy, and Market Perspectives

Amid growing concerns over global warming and the urgent need to achieve carbon neutrality, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) has emerged as a critical technology for reducing industrial greenhouse gas emissions. In particular, by-product gases generated from steel, refining, and chemical industries contain CO₂, CO, H₂, and CH₄, which can be captured, separated, and converted into high-value-added products. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the concepts, technical trends, policies, market dynamics, and patent landscapes related to CCUS and by-product gas utilization. Findings indicate that the global CCUS market is expanding at an average annual growth rate exceeding 20%, with notable progress in catalytic conversion (methanol, olefins), biofuel production, and mineral carbonation. South Korea, in alignment with its carbon neutrality goals, is actively pursuing large-scale CCU megaprojects, reforming its Emissions Trading Scheme, and accelerating commercialization efforts through international CCS storage projects and CCU technology development. This paper highlights key policy and technological implications for strengthening domestic CCUS competitiveness and fostering industrial ecosystem innovation.
