Evaluation of Livestock Wastewater Treatment Efficiency and Microbial Community Changes Using Cold Plasma

This study evaluated the removal efficiency of organic matter and nutrients in livestock wastewater using cold plasma-based advanced oxidation process. The changes in microbial community was also analyzed with both culture-dependent and culture-independent methods. The results indicated that the cold plasma process achieved a removal efficiency of 80% for total organic matter (TOC) and 67% for total nitrogen (TN) within 5 days. Microbial community analysis was confirmed that cold plasma treatment altered microbial diversity and increased the proportion of specific resistant strains. Especially, despite the strong oxidative stress conditions, the proportion of Gelidibacter sp., typically found in marine environemtns, increased in the cold plasma treated water. In conclusion, cold plasma technology shows promising pre-treatment process for livestock wastewater treatment. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that analyzing the impact and changes in the microbial ecosystems in a crucial process for the stable application and integration of this technology with other treatment process.
