Determination of Components in Tar from Gasification of Solid Waste using GC-MS

In order to use the syngas obtained from waste gasification for industrial purposes, a process to remove tar is required. Analysis of tar components in syngas is essential for the tar removal process to improve the efficiency of waste gasification and the quality of syngas. This study quantitatively analyzed tar components in syngas generated from municipal solid waste gasification processes using GC-MS. Analysis in GC-MS-SIM mode, which utilizes unique selected ions corresponding to tar components, was recommended for quantification. The calibration curve was analyzed using the internal standard method over a concentration range of 5-20 μg/mL. The coefficient of determination (r2) of the calibration curve was 0.9996~0.9999, indicating high accuracy. The detection limit ranged from 0.16-1.028 μg/mL, and the limit of quantification ranged from 0.721-3.274 μg/mL. Tar samples collected from the downstream of a municipal solid waste gasifier and an electrostatic precipitator respectively detected benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, styrene, and naphthalene. The concentrations of target substances in the tar sample collected from the downstream of the electrostatic precipitator were 3-4 times higher than those in the tar sample collected from the downstream of the gasifier, and p-xylene was detected.
