Kinetic analysis of polypropylene packaging pyrolysis: Application of TGA experiment and a reported lumped model

This study determined the overall pyrolysis rate constant(ktga) of a polypropylene (PP) packaging material from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and the ktga was used to rescale the reaction rate constants of a reported lumped kinetic model for PP pyrolysis. The activation energy (287.46 kJ/mol) and pre-exponential factor (6.63×1019 min-1) obtained from TGA enabled accurate reproduction of the degradation behavior of the sample. The rescaled lumped model was then applied to quantitatively predict the conversion pathways among wax, oil, and gas products. This approach integrates sample-specific pyrolysis rates with literature-based product distribution tendencies, providing the pyrolysis behavior of the target PP material and supporting the determination of operational conditions such as reaction temperature and residence time.
