Health Behavior Patterns and Risk Factors by Sexual Behavior and Contraceptive Practice among Korean Adolescents: Analysis of the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 2020~2024

This study utilized data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (KYRBS) conducted between 2020 and 2024 to comprehensively analyze health behavior characteristics and risk factors according to sexual experience and contraceptive practice among adolescents. The findings revealed that factors such as school grade, sex education in school, residence type, household economic status, addiction-related behaviors (weekday smartphone overdependence, drinking, smoking), and mental health characteristics (depressed mood, stress level) significantly influenced contraceptive use and non-use in adolescent sexual behaviors. Furthermore, among sexually experienced adolescents, those who did not practice contraception were more complexly exposed to diverse risk factors. Based on these results, the following recommendations are proposed: First, tailored interventions for high-risk groups regarding sexual behavior are necessary. Second, an integrated program is required that provides both mental health counseling and sexual health education for adolescents, promoting a comprehensive approach to mental and sexual health. Third, the effectiveness of school-based sex education should be strengthened.
