Movie is a narrative art form, and visual images serving as storytelling media for narrative transmission are indispensable elements. Since the inception of cinema, technological advancement has repeatedly presented new aesthetic possibilities. Among the diverse materials constituting film, the development of visualization technology, in particular, has evolved day by day, presenting new cinematic experiences. Science fiction films, in particular, demonstrate an increasingly pronounced manifestation of this phenomenon. This study aims to elucidate how the advancement of VFX technology one of the diverse visualization techniques implementing science fiction films—has influenced storytelling. Planet of the Apes which opened the curtain as an original series in 1968, is a landmark film in the science fiction genre. Beginning from a novel in 1963 and undergoing transmedia adaptation in various forms within the same narrative structure over more than six decades, it has maintained the continuity of the series to the present day. Over more than half a century, VFX technology in cinema has developed at a rapid pace, demonstrating new visual language and visual aesthetics. With the 1968 original work and the 2024 reboot sharing the same world-building structure as research subjects, this study analyzes the developmental process of VFX technology in both works. Among the various elements constituting storytelling, focusing on character and spatial storytelling, this research will examine VFX from the perspective of 'Telling'. The study seeks to contemplate meaningful conclusions regarding changes in storytelling and the processes underlying these transformations.
