영어 트랙 외국인 유학생에 대한 비즈니스 영어 수업의 학습자 인식 연구: D 대학의 설문을 중심으로

English Instruction for International Students in the English Track

본 논문의 목적은 영어 트랙의 비즈니스 영어 수업을 수강하는 외국인 유학생들에 대한 수업의 인식을 고찰하는 것이다. 이러한 연구 과정을 위해 필자는 경북 경산에 소재한 D 대학에 재학하고 있는 58명의 학생(네팔 그리고 우즈베키스탄 국적)을 대상으로 비즈니스 영어 수업에 대한 설문을 진행하였다. 이러한 과정은 Study Korea 300K Project라는 대한민국 정부의 외국인 유학생 유입정책에 따라 점점 증가하고 있는 외국인 유학생을 어떻게 가르쳐야 하는지 특히, ESP 과목을 어떻게 가르쳐야 할 것인지에 관한 연구였다. 설문 결과, 영어 트랙의 외국인 유학생들이 비즈니스 영어 수업의 인식에 대한 설문에 있어서 주요 항목들이 국내 학생들과는 다소 유의미하게 차이점은 있었다. 하지만 국내 대학생들과 비교할 때 비즈니스 영어 수업을 수강하는 데 있어 가장 큰 인식의 차이점으로는 이들의 한국어 학습에 대한 필요성을 언급하였다. 이러한 결과는 외국인 유학생이 한국에 정착도 고려하고 있으며 고국으로 돌아갈 경우, 한국계 기업에 취업하고 싶은 의향이 강했기 때문으로 판단할 수 있다. 따라서 국내 대학생들과 비교할 시 비즈니스 영어 수업에 있어서 가장 중요한 인식 차이가 ‘한국어 지식 습득’이라는 것을 강조할 수 있었다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how international students in the English-track Business English course perceive their learning experience. A survey was conducted with 58 Nepali and Uzbek students at D University in Gyeongsan as part of the Study Korea 300K Project, which aims to increase international student enrollment in Korea. The study focused on how ESP (English for Specific Purposes) courses should be taught to this growing student group. Survey findings revealed meaningful differences between international and domestic students in their perceptions of the Business English course. The most distinct difference was the international students’ strong recognition of the need to learn Korean. This suggests that many are considering long-term settlement in Korea or hope to work for Korea-related companies. Thus, compared with domestic students, international students placed the greatest importance on acquiring Korean language knowledge.
