자막 번역에서의 함축적 의미 연구

A Study of Implied Meaning in Subtitling

본 연구는 영화 자막 번역에서 드러나는 은유적 표현과 함축적 의미의 번역 전략을 연구하고, 자막 번역이 단순한 문자 변환을 넘어 화용론적 맥락 속에서 그 의미가 재구성되는 복합적 과정임을 재확인하고자 한다. Desilla(2025)는 영화 대사의 언어유희와 문화적 암시가 그리스어 자막에서 ‘보존’과 ‘명시화’ 번역 전략을 통해 처리되는 양상을 분석한 바 있으며, 이를 통해 자막 번역이 언어적·문화적 층위 모두 긴밀히 연결되어 있음을 보여주었다. 또한, 해당 연구는 다양한 언어권에서 나타나는 번역 전략의 차이를 제시함으로써, 자막 번역이 보편적 규범과 개별 언어 및 문화적 특수성 사이에서 균형을 모색하는 작업임을 시사한다. 따라서 본 연구는 이러한 선행연구를 토대로 한국어 자막 데이터를 추가 분석하여, 은유와 함축이 한국어의 언어적·문화적 맥락 속에서 어떠한 방식으로 조정되고 재현되는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 통해 기존 연구가 주로 다루어 온 유럽 언어권을 넘어, 한국어 자막 번역의 전략적 특성과 화용론적 함의를 논의하고자 한다.

This paper sets out to investigate the translation strategies employed in rendering metaphorical expressions and implicatures in film subtitling, highlighting that subtitling is not a mere transfer of words but a complex process in which meaning is reconstructed within a pragmatic context. Desilla (2025) analyzed how linguistic and cultural allusions in film dialogue were handled in Greek subtitles through preservation and explicitation strategies, demonstrating that subtitling is closely intertwined with both linguistic transfer and cultural interpretation. Building upon these insights, the present study analyzes Korean subtitle data to explore how metaphors and implicatures are adjusted and represented within the linguistic and cultural context of the Korean language. By extending the discussion beyond the European focus of previous research, this paper aims to highlight the strategic characteristics and pragmatic implications of Korean subtitling.
