『제로의 초점』에서 마쓰모토 세이초는 당시 패전의 잔재에서 벗어나 경제적인 고도성장을 향해 달려가는 일본 사회가 은폐하는 점령기 시절 팡팡의 어두운 과거를 살인사건과 추리의 기법으로 재조명한다.『제로의 초점』에서 겐이치의 실종 사건은 자살로 위장한 살인이라는 사치코의 치밀한 복수의 프로세스로 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 무엇보다 세이초는 연쇄살인의 배후에 존재하는 여성에 대한 남성 중심의 폭력적인 사회구조를 드러냄으로써, 추리소설에 사회성을 부여하고 이에 대한 독자의 관심과 이해를 얻게 되었다는 점에서 이 작품의 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

In Zero Focus, Matsumoto Seicho reexamines the dark past of the Occupation era — concealed by a Japanese society eager to escape the remnants of defeat and rush toward rapid economic growth—through the lens of murder and detective fiction. The disappearance of Kenichi can be understood as part of Sachiko’s meticulous process of revenge, in which a murder is disguised as suicide. Above all, Seichō exposes the violent, male-centered social structures underlying the series of murders, thereby imbuing the detective novel with social significance and drawing readers’ attention and understanding. This is where the true importance of the work lies.
