추리소설의 홈즈와 왓슨 서술 방식에 대한 기계번역 분석: Conan Doyle 추리소설 중심으로

Analysis of Machine Translation in Narrative Method between Holmes and Watson: Focusing on Conan Doyle’s detective novels

이 연구는 1인칭 관찰자 시점의 왓슨과 1인칭 주인공 시점의 홈즈 간 시점과 관련하여 인간번역사와 기계번역기의 결과를 대조 분석함으로써, 어떠한 유의미한 차이가 있는지를 도출하는 것이다. 그 이유는 추리 서사구조의 서술 및 서술자의 관점은 독자의 흥미와 추리에 영향을 미칠 수 있기 때문이다. 이 연구는 두 편의 인간번역사와 기계번역기 간 번역문을 통해, 추리소설에서 시점번역이 왜 중요한지에 대한 근거와 번역에서 이러한 시점을 고려하지 않았을 때 추리소설의 정보 전달에 미치는 영향에 대해 논의할 것이다. 특히, 번역가는 맥락적 상황을 인지하여 재해석이 가능하지만, 기계번역기도 그러한 맥락적 상황을 다각도 인지하고 번역가능한지를 비교 분석할 것이다. 이를 위해서, 서보현·김순영(2018)이 정리한 ‘기계 번역오류유형’을 토대로 분석할 것이다. 결론으로, 맥락적 상황에 대한 시점을 고려하지 않은 번역문은 추리소설의 서사구조에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 논의할 것이다.

In Conan Doyle’s detective novels, there are two types of narrative structures he used, namely first-person protagonist’s narrative of Holmes(the omniscient narrator) and first person observer’s narrative of Watson. Their narrative perspectives are used to create a particular effect in the minds of the readers and objectify Holmes’s facts. This research compares human translations with a machine translator in order to examine their differences of contextual and cultural situation. To discuss the translation of two types of narratives between human translations and machine translations, an analysis of Errors in Machine Translation by Seobohyeon·Kimsoonyoung(2018) was used to analyze translated texts. This paper aims to investigate why the translation of two types of point of view in detective novels is significant. Furthermore, by examining instances in which the functions of point of view are not effectively preserved in translation, this research investigates their effects on the narrative structure of detective novels.
