혼합연령학급 유아의 놀이 속 갈등 지원에 대한 교사의 자기연구

Supporting Conflict Resolution in Young Children’s Play in a Mixed-Age Classroom: A Teacher’s Self-Study

본 연구는 혼합연령 학급의 놀이 상황에서 발생하는 유아 간 갈등에 대한 교사의 이해와 지원 양상을 탐색하고, 그 과정에서 나타나는 교사의 반성적 성찰 과정을 분석한 자기연구이다. 본 연구의 목적은 교사가 일상적 학급 맥락에서 유아의 갈등을 어떻게 인식하고 대응하는지, 그리고 그 경험을 통해 교육적 신념과 실천을 어떻게 재구성해 나가는지를 심층적으로 규명하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 K도 A시 B초등학교 병설유치원 혼합연령(4-5세) 학급의 유아 8명을 연구참여자로 선정하였다. 자료 수집은 오전 자유놀이 시간에 발생한 갈등 장면을 중심으로 이루어졌으며, 비디오 및 오디오 녹화, 관찰기록, 반성적 저널, 심층 면담(자기 면담, 유아 면담, 동료 협의) 등을 통해 다각적으로 자료를 수집하고 삼각 검증하였다. 수집된 자료는 전사, 코딩, 주제 도출의 질적 분석 절차를 거쳐 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 교사의 경험은 ‘교사가 해결해 주어야만 하는 갈등으로 이해하기’, ‘시간과 관계의 고유한 맥락에서 갈등 해결에 대한 믿음 드러내기’, ‘유아들이 경험해도 괜찮은 갈등으로 이해하기’의 세 가지 범주로 도출되었다. 연구자는 혼합연령 학급의 맥락 속에서 갈등에 대한 자신의 이해와 신념, 지원 방식을 성찰하며 갈등의 새로운 측면과 유아의 유능성을 재인식하게 되었다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 갈등에 대한 교사의 이중적 관점, 혼합연령 학급 교사의 맥락적 편견과 고정관념, 그리고 유아가 지닌 갈등 해결의 유능성 측면에서 논의하였다.

This self-study explores a teacher's understanding and support of peer conflicts in a mixed-age classroom, focusing on the reconstruction of educational beliefs through reflective practice. The participants were eight children (ages 4–5) attending a public kindergarten in A City. Data were collected from conflict episodes during morning free-play sessions using participant observations, recordings, reflective journals, and in-depth interviews, and were analyzed through qualitative thematic analysis. The findings revealed three themes regarding the teacher's experience: (1) understanding conflict as a problem the teacher must resolve, (2) manifesting belief in resolution within the context of time and relationships, and (3) redefining conflict as an acceptable experience for children. Through this process, the researcher moved beyond contextual biases to recognize children’s competence in resolving conflicts. The study discusses the teacher's dual perspectives on conflict and the unique dynamics of mixed-age settings, offering implications for supporting children’s autonomy.
