Xunzi's criticism of Mohism stems from the fact that his thought was grounded in a Confucian perspective. Therefore, at first glance, it might appear to be a debate between Confucianism and Mohism. The ideological foundation of Xunzi's philosophy lies in the reverence for Confucian etiquette and morality. Therefore, it is only natural that he criticized Mohist thought and its thinkers, who held a critical stance toward the humanities represented by etiquette and morality. In other words, Xunzi believed that Confucian rites and music, represented by etiquette and morality, could overcome the turbulent social climate of his time and create a new world. Therefore, he criticized Mohist thought and its thinkers, who emphasized the negative aspects of rites and music and argued for their uselessness. Among Xunzi's criticisms of Mohist thinkers, Mozi and Song Jian are particularly noteworthy. This can be seen as a critique of Mohist rites and music from the perspective of Confucian rites and music, and the Mohist view of their uselessness. Xunzi's fierce criticism of Mohist thought prevented the Mohist doctrine of the uselessness of ritual, music, and dance from gaining widespread popularity. In this sense, Xunzi breathed new life into Confucianism in the Spring&Fall and Warring States period. Furthermore, he contributed significantly to laying a solid foundation for the development of Confucianism from the Qin and Han dynasties through the two Han dynasties and into the Ming and Qing dynasties.
