While modern society is experiencing a process of religious disaffiliation from traditional institutional religions, the use of non-institutional predictive practices such as divination has simultaneously continued to expand. This phenomenon may be understood in relation to modern individuals’ anxiety regarding an uncertain future and their desire for prediction, needs that are not always sufficiently addressed by traditional religious systems. Unlike institutional religions, which are characterized by established doctrines, organizational structures, and prescribed forms of affiliation, non-institutional predictive practices are easily accessible and provide individualized responses to a wide range of personal concerns. Their popularity has been reinforced through direct and indirect experiences of perceived accuracy, commonly described as the feeling that a prediction is “correct.” Previous attempts to explain such experiences have relied primarily on psychological theories, including the Forer effect, the Barnum effect, and confirmation bias. However, these approaches face limitations in accounting for experiences grounded in direct personal encounters with divinatory practices. This study examines the experience of perceived accuracy in non-institutional predictive practices through a conceptual framework that combines philosophical analyses centered on theories of emotion with insights from affective science and predictive cognition. It argues that such experiences cannot be reduced to simple error or cognitive bias. Rather, they emerge through predictive cognitive processes in which associative and projective mechanisms organize patterns of interpretation, while emotional processes contribute to the formation of intuitive understanding. Through this perspective, the experience of perceived accuracy is interpreted as a process of self-understanding formed through the interaction of cognition, emotion, and meaning-making.
