대체역사물 웹소설 사례로 본 설화 기반 스토리텔링 연구: <고구려 몰락 귀족이 되었다>를 중심으로

A Study on Folktale-Based Storytelling in Alternative History Web Novels: Focusing on I Became a Displaced Noble of the Goguryeo

본 연구는 대체역사물 웹소설 <고구려 몰락 귀족이 되었다>를 대상으로 설화 기반 스토리텔링의 활용 양상과 그 의미를 고찰한 것이다. 이 작품은 온달 설화를 단순한 모티프 차용의 대상으로 활용하는 데 그치지 않고 작품 전체를 조직하는 서사적 골격으로 수용하고 있다. 작품은 독자가 이미 알고 있는 온달 설화의 비극적 결말을 현대 장르서사의 문법 속에서 재맥락화함으로써 새로운 서사적 가능성을 제시한다. 또한 온달 설화의 인물 형상과 결연 구조를 현실적 인과관계 속에서 재구성하면서도, 우직한 바보 형상과 단순･명료한 서술 방식 등 설화적 특성을 적극적으로 활용하여 오히려 더욱 설화적인 인물과 서사를 창출한다. 아울러 작품은 온달 형상이 지닌 우직함과 공동체 지향성을 확장하여 공생과 올바름의 가치를 형상화하고, 이를 통해 대체역사물이 지닐 수 있는 대안서사적 가능성을 보여준다. 특히 개인의 성공과 욕망 충족을 넘어 공동체의 번영과 질서 회복을 지향하는 서사를 전개함으로써 설화에 내재한 삶의 철학을 현대적으로 재구성하고 있다. 이를 통해 본고는 <고구려 몰락 귀족이 되었다>가 설화를 단순한 문화 콘텐츠의 원천이나 소재가 아니라 장편 서사의 조직 원리이자 세계 인식의 기반으로 활용하고 있음을 밝혔다. 또한 본 사례를 통해 설화가 현대 웹소설 속에서도 여전히 유효한 서사 자원으로 기능할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

This study examines how folktales are utilized in contemporary web novels and explores their narrative significance through the alternative-history web novel Goryeo Mallak Gwijogi Doeeotda I Became a Fallen Noble of Goguryeo. Rather than borrowing the tale of Ondal as a motif, the novel adopts it as the fundamental narrative framework organizing the story. The novel recontextualizes the tragic ending of Ondal’s tale within the conventions of contemporary genre fiction, while drawing upon the readers’ prior familiarity with the original tale to continuously recall the tragic fate of Ondal. The novel reconstructs the characters and narrative relationships of the Ondal’s tale within a realistic framework of causality while preserving and even amplifying folkloric characteristics. Through the representation of the “foolish yet steadfast hero,” the emphasis on perseverance, and a simple and direct narrative style, the work recreates folkloric modes of storytelling in a modern web-fiction context. The novel thus demonstrates that narrative principles and character archetypes derived from folktales can continue to function effectively within contemporary genre fiction. The novel also expands the ethical implications of the Ondal figure by foregrounding values such as coexistence, communal responsibility, and moral integrity. It presents an alternative vision of history oriented toward the well-being of the community. The work thus reveals how the philosophical values embedded in folktales can be reinterpreted and revitalized within modern narrative forms. This study argues that I Became a Fallen Noble of Goguryeo illustrates the possibility of folktales functioning not merely as cultural resources or narrative motifs but as organizing principles for long-form storytelling and as foundations for constructing alternative worldviews. Further, the study demonstrates the continuing relevance of folktales as productive narrative resources in contemporary wb fiction.
