This study compares and analyzes dragon representations in picturebooks from Korea, China, the United Kingdom, and the United States, focusing on how dragons are portrayed across cultural contexts and how traditional representations are inherited and transformed in folktale and original story picturebooks. To achieve this objective, I selected and analyzed twenty picturebooks from the four countries using qualitative content analysis. The findings indicate that dragons in Korean and Chinese picturebooks are portrayed as sacred guardians associated with rain, water, and protection, and are closely connected with cultural elements such as folk legends and traditional festivals. In particular, Korean picturebooks feature a distinctive narrative structure in which the Imugi transforms into a dragon. In contrast, dragons in British and American picturebooks are primarily depicted as mysterious, threatening creatures rooted in medieval chivalric literature and Western fantasy narratives. In original story picturebooks, however, they are reinterpreted as characters that interact with humans and grow alongside them. These findings show that dragon representations reflect each culture's views of nature, worldview, and narrative traditions. This study extends dragon studies beyond the predominantly Western perspective to include East Asian picturebooks and provides implications for multicultural picturebook education and the creation of picturebooks for young children.
